- Ron Clarke - Mayor of the Gold Coast
Ron Clarke is one of the all time great Australian athletes, and one
of the best known middle and long distance runners in the 1960s. He is
best remembered for setting nineteen world records, but also for never
winning a gold medal at the Olympic Games.
Ron Clarke won a bronze medal at the Tokyo games, but most believe that
he deserved to win an Olympic gold, especially after his courageous effort
in Mexico City when he almost died from a heart condition after having
finished the race in 5th place.
A Gold Medal from the 1952 Helsinki Games which belonged to Czech runner
Emil Zatopek ( one of the greatest Olympic athletes in history) was given
to Clarke in July 1966 with the simple words of encouragement "You
deserved this" written on it. The medal is on display at the Gold
Coast Sporting Hall of Fame at Southport's Owen Park. Ron Clarke also
donated 17 of his 19 world record trophies to Queensland's first dedicated
sports museum.
Ron Clarke currently serves as Mayor of the Gold Coast. Ron and his wife
have come to the Gold Coast for holidays almost every year since 1957,
and they came back for good in 1995.
